How to convert to military time

  1. AM times: keep the hour and add a leading zero. 7:05 AM is 0705. 12 AM (midnight) is 0000.
  2. PM times: add 12 to the hour. 5:30 PM is 5 + 12 = 17, so 1730. 12 PM (noon) stays 1200.
  3. Going back: for 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hour and add PM. 2145 is 9:45 PM.
Worked example: A nurse's shift runs 1900 to 0730. 1900 − 12 = 7, so it starts at 7:00 PM; 0730 is 7:30 AM. Out loud: "nineteen hundred to zero seven thirty." The shift is 12 hours 30 minutes (the hours between two times calculator does that part).

Questions

How do you convert regular time to military time?

For AM, keep the hour and add a leading zero (9:15 AM is 0915; 12 AM is 0000). For PM, add 12 to the hour (3:20 PM is 1520), except 12 PM, which stays 1200.

What is 1700 in regular time?

5:00 PM. Subtract 12 from any hour from 13 to 23 and add PM.

How do you say military time out loud?

Say the hours and the minutes as two numbers: 1730 is "seventeen thirty," 0800 is "zero eight hundred," and 0000 is "zero hundred hours." Some people say "oh" instead of "zero."

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Both are used. 0000 is the start of a day and 2400 is the end of one. Most time cards and systems use 0000.

Does military time use a colon?

The military writes it without one: 1730. Hospitals, airlines and most 24-hour clocks write 17:30. Both mean the same time.
