About Calculate Hours Worked
CalculateHoursWorked.com is a set of free calculators for the time math in a working week: hours worked, lunch breaks, overtime, decimal hours for payroll, military time and biweekly timesheets. Punchy, the brass punch clock, does the arithmetic and stamps your card.
Why it exists
Most people check a paycheck by adding up a week of punches by hand, and most mistakes come from small things: forgetting the lunch break, reading 7.45 as 7:45, or counting overtime across two weeks instead of one. These tools are built to get that right in under a minute on a phone, with no sign-up.
How the math works
- Shift length is clock out minus clock in. If the clock-out time is earlier, the shift ran past midnight.
- Unpaid breaks come out of each day. Totals show as hours:minutes and as decimal hours (minutes ÷ 60).
- Overtime uses the rule you pick: federal (over 40 hours in a workweek at 1.5×), California (daily 8 and 12 hours, the seventh day, and weekly 40), or your own settings.
It's arithmetic, not legal, tax or payroll advice. Pay rules differ by state, employer and job type; for questions about your own pay, ask your employer, your state's labor department or the U.S. Department of Labor.
